VILNIUS HAPPY BUBBLE
May 2025
Vilnius Happy Bubble is inspired by two milestones: Lithuania being named the happiest country for people under 30 and Vilnius becoming the European Green Capital of 2025. This pavilion celebrates a growing sense of well-being and environmental progress through a playful and data-driven form.
Using happiness index scores and air quality data from 2017 to 2024, the project explores how emotional and environmental health evolve together. It reflects a research process that revealed both happiness and air quality in Vilnius have steadily improved—offering a hopeful vision of a city where clean air and quality of life go hand in hand.
Each of the pavilion’s eight bubbles corresponds to one year of data. Using Kangaroo (a physics engine within Grasshopper), the bubbles are inflated to different extents based on Lithuania’s happiness score for that year—the happier the year, the more inflated the bubble. The surfaces of the bubbles are covered with radial curves whose density reflects the air quality: years with lower pollution levels result in more open, breathable patterns.
